General Rating: 8.2/10
My Rating: 10/10
The Gundam franchise is one of the greatest anime franchises I have seen so far. I have yet to see much of the entire franchise, but so far Gundam 00 has been one of my favorites. I am not the biggest fan of the mecha genre, but Gundam is one of the mechas I enjoy. It has the factions of resurgence, epic lead characters, and breathtaking mecha battles. Out of the Gundam franchise I have seen, Gundam 00 has the best story and best cast of main characters, and is my second favorite in the series overall.
In the world of Gundam 00, mankind's dependence on fossil fuels has lead to their complete depletion as they enter an energy crisis unlike anything before. Out of fear, humanity began focusing on the alternative energy source of solar power. Nations have united together to form three major factions - the Union of Solar Energy, Advanced European Union, and the Human Reform League - and each has access to a solar power generator that gives them access to limitless energy. However countries that were once dependent on fossil fuel sales are now plunged in poverty, leading to years of warfare and internal strife over the control of solar energy. Amid this chaos going on in the world, an unknown paramilitary organization calling themselves "Celestial Being," aspire to end all warfare through armed intervention by using mysterious technologically advanced Mobile Suits known as Gundams. Gundam 00 follows the story of Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism, and Tieria Erde, Gundam Meisters of Celestial Being who dive into the battle between the three superpowers to accomplish their goal of changing the world.
Story: Gundam 00 has a great story, as I said before, the best story of the entire franchise. It's masterfully thought out, in the same way the acclaimed masterpiece Code Geass was. It's well made with unexpected twists and uprisings. The world of Gundam is a very interesting and intricate one, And 00 uses this very well. It doesn't leave anything out. That is what makes its story the masterpiece it is in Gundam 00.
Characters: Gundam 00 has undoubtedly some of the best characters out of the franchise. Setsuna was a great main character and really led this anime to the greatness it reached. For an anime mostly focused on its gundams and pilots, Gundam really draws into the characters, their emotions, and where and whom with their loyalties lie.
Soundtrack: Gundam 00 has my favorite soundtrack out of the franchise, however it's not one that stands out much on it's own. It serves the anime and its franchise well.
Art: For a mid 2000s anime, Gundam's art has a more modern feel to it. It serves the anime and its futuristic feel very well and I fully enjoyed the art of the series. The character designs were very well made, and it has some pretty awesome gundam and mobile suit designs too. These were definitely the highlight of this anime.
For an anime franchise as well loved and as popular as the gundam franchise, it's unlikely Gundam 00 is a new name around the block. However I really do recommend this epic franchise to anyone, especially mecha, action, and shounen fans. Gundam 00 is a great entry to the series, even though it's not the first of the franchise. Although existing in the same world, Gundam 00 is a new story of its own. I especially recommend this anime for fans of animes like the Fullmetal Panic, Code Geass, Macross F, Guilty Crown, Eureka Seven, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Gurren Lagann. I have loved this anime for quite some time and I believe you will also love this anime and should give it a watch!
